I had sustained a very significant personal loss in the death of my husband. A friend was taking a class from Darrel. She recommended I take a class and do a portrait of my husband. Previously I had been unable to sketch even in a most elementary manner, so I believed it to be impossible for me to do. She kept encouraging me to try. Eventually I went to Darrel’s studio and saw his work and what his students were turning out. I began to wonder what I had to lose by trying.
