Here’s a random sampling of what my students have accomplished over the years, and what they have to say. There’s more student pencil drawings on the next page.
Ever since I was small, I enjoyed drawing. My ‘artwork’ was self-taught and quite one-dimensional. Over the years, the quality of my drawings never really progressed to a satisfying level. That is, until I met Darrel Tank. Darrel's passion for drawing is contagious! His style of teaching is full of humor and encouragement and the techniques he developed are presented in a clear and understandable manner.”
- Cindy Gillett

It was over 20 years ago when I was working as a designer at an advertising agency that I first became aware of Darrel Tank. The samples of his work were amazing and they became the standard by which I measured all other pencil illustration.
“Being in his class is truly a joy, it is relaxed and fun, while at the same time we are learning techniques that seem so simple, yet make such a big difference.”
- Kathy Perez
Taking a series of Darrel’s portrait classes is like spending a year in art school and a week laughing with friends. I learned how to loosen up and “see” my subject and to truly appreciate pencil as a medium. Darrel was eager to share invaluable information on lighting, depth and technique. The joy of completing my first portrait was exhilarating and only got better with each ensuing success. My choice of subject was entirely personal: whether my children, grandchildren or my loyal little dog. Doing their portraits was a blessing; it once again allowed me to spend precious time with those dear to me.”
- Ann Warner

In meeting Darrel and under his tutelage, here was a man who had focused his entire life formulating techniques, experimenting with paper, different methods, intense studying of shadows, and learning how to have an eye for detail.
“Most importantly, here is a teacher with tremendous humor, compassion and a genuine desire for others to share in the joy of creating art; the rewards of the drawing process; patience, blessing others and increased self esteem.
“In my own work, when people give me complements, I must always tell them about Darrel Tank, give credit where due and encourage them to take the plunge, to go ahead and pursue whatever talent they have.
“But with Darrel first.”
- John M. Neill

This class is great! I was looking for an art teacher, but could not find someone who drew in a manner that I wanted to learn. When I saw Darrel’s work, I did not think I could achieve anything close to it. However, with time and repetition I am gradually learning his techniques. I am so pleased and excited about continuing. Darrel is a gifted teacher (and a wonderful person) and it is easy to learn from him. I would encourage anyone who has an interest to give it a try.”
- Julie Johnston

I have always loved to draw, but never could make any faces look real. Then I watched my friend learn Darrel's techniques and just had to try it for myself. With Darrel’s guidance, patience, and techniques, I’m loving the opportunity I have to draw my grandkids and family as I’m gaining confidence in my work. I experience a total peace of mind while I am focused on my drawing (a wonderful stress reducer!)
“I am in total awe of Darrel’s talent, and love the fact that he is willing to share his talent, technique, and love of drawing, with us.”
- Kris Hennis
