How 3 White Pencils and
a Black Artboard
Will Give You That “First Love”
Feeling All Over Again...

Just when you thought you couldn’t love
drawing any more than you already do… Darrel goes and
shows you how to “draw light into the darkness” with these
stunning “white-pencil-on-black-artboard” drawings.

Do you remember that first time you fell in love with the idea of drawing a picture?

You realized that you were now able to create illusions of three-dimensions with a simple piece of paper and a handful of pencils. This realization had you breathless and giddy with anxious anticipation. You did what you were once convinced you couldn’t do— “What’s next?” you asked yourself.

You were in love!

Anything seemed possible! And that next big project became a skill-enhancing challenge on your artistic journey instead of a disheartening slog down a dead-end street.

You may have discovered Darrel Tank’s teaching after this feeling hit you. Or, Darrel’s lessons might even be what what led you to this soul-stirring experience.

Either way, the thrill of that first realization continues to drive you to keep finding new challenges, to push yourself to the next level, to keep going back to that feeling of falling in love for the first time!

Are you ready for your next challenge?

Just like you need to feed your creativity with fresh experiences daily, it’s important to “spice things up” in your drawing routine as well.

Take the enriching exercise of “drawing in reverse” for example. By working backwards—drawing with white pencils on black artboard—you will begin to see the highlights in your drawings like never before. You’ll gain a new understanding of negative space, and the way that light illuminates a subject will take on a whole new meaning.

And you’ll see how the same 5-Pencil Method layering techniques that Darrel teaches can be applied in reverse by using three specific types of white colored pencils. You’ll learn the secrets for creating smooth, “wow-inducing” values—of course, while staying in control and leaving yourself the option to remove excess color when needed.

Plus, graphite and colored pencils may be “cousins,” but you’ll discover right off that they have their own personalities. In these 8 lessons, Darrel breaks down the differences and similarities and shows you how you will need to use tools like the kneaded eraser. Some colored pencils aren’t as willing to “let go” as graphite pencil, so you’ll need to learn the secrets to staying in control and out of trouble.

Hundreds of students have had the chance to experience that “first love” feeling all over again with these fun and insightful exercises—and now you can too!

These 8 lessons are now available on DVD and for digital download.

These next 8 Art Studio lessons are jam-packed with all the same drawing goodness that the first 32 lessons have made available.

We expect that you may be ready to fall in love with these new lessons right now! So, just click the “Buy Now” button below this sentence and get one of these DVD sets started on it’s way through the mail to you right away—or get a download started so you can begin your lessons in the next couple of minutes.

DRAW IN REVERSE

It may sounds daunting. Drawing is hard enough going forward; why go backward? But this is actually an amazing (and downright cool) method for drawing using the power of negative space. You’ll use a white pencil to draw light into the darkness of a black illustration board and create stunning images that capture the attention they deserve.

See with
BRAND NEW EYES

You’ll learn new ways to “see” like an artist! These 8 lessons will open your eyes to a veritable kaleidoscope of new visual principles—from “drawing in reverse” to mapping out angles and isolating shapes. You’ll never look at the art of drawing the same way again.

SEE THROUGH COMPLEXITY

Lessons 33-40 break drawing down to its core. Long before the much-sought-after hyperrealism and intense detail can be achieved, there needs to be an understanding of basic form. You’ll learn to see through the complexity of your subjects and get straight to the shapes and angles that make up the “bones” of your artwork. Plus, you’ll sharpen your “artistic vision” and boost your freehand drawing skills with Darrel’s fun and easy-to-follow exercises.

LESSON DESCRIPTIONS

LESSON 33

DRAWING IN REVERSE

Lesson 32 was a cliffhanger, ending with Darrel’s nearly finished glass of water. Here you’ll review the finished work and move on to your next challenge: drawing a lightbulb! Take your knowledge of drawing transparent objects to a new level with the delicate, shimmering splendor of Mr. Edison’s lightbulb. Best of all, you’ll use a white pencil on black illustration board!

LESSON 34

WATER GLASS REVISITED

In this lesson Darrel revisits the glass-of-water drawing from Lesson 32, but in reverse! You’ll use a white colored pencil to redraw the glass and gain a deeper understanding of light and value. You’ll learn to spot highlights like a pro and will discover the power of negative space in your drawings.

LESSON 35

MAN ON BLACK: PART 1

You’ll watch as the form of a man’s face slowly appears from the darkness of your black illustration board. With your white pencil, you’ll “draw light into the darkness” and unlock the secrets of how light and its absence work to create the images we see.

LESSON 36

MAN ON BLACK: PART 2

Whether you’re using a graphite pencil or colored pencils, layers are integral to the 5-Pencil Method. With a base layer of white already down, Darrel moves on to his softer, waxier white colored pencils in this lesson. You’ll see how Darrel’s method transcends media and will learn to work with this exciting “cousin” to graphite.

LESSON 37

SHAPE AND VALUE

Put down that straightedge. Drop your divider. Forget about your brush. This lesson is all about recognizing the shapes and shifting values that make up your subject. Forget about the details for Lesson 37; your focus is on the bigger picture. This seemingly simple exercise will improve your freehand skills and change the way you see your drawings!

LESSON 38

MAPPING OUT ANGLES

Okay, now you can pick up that straightedge! You’re going to use it to map out the major angles of the face. Darrel will show you a simple trick to boost your accuracy and help you see the relationships between shapes. No more guesswork!

LESSON 39

VISUALIZING THE FORM: PART 1

In this lesson you’ll learn to look at a drawing subject and see it in its simplest form. That sounds easy, but there’s more to it than you may have imagined. Darrel shares a simple but insightful exercise you can do to ensure that your layouts are accurate. Plus, you’ll gain one more powerful tool for seeing relationships between shapes.

LESSON 40

VISUALIZING THE FORM: PART 2

Lesson 39 broke your reference down to its simplest form. Now is your chance to build it back up! Learn how you can turn those seemingly bland reference lines into the more refined edges of the face. And find out how to use these guidelines as markers for positioning the facial features. You won’t believe how quickly a few lines can be turned into a beautiful sketch!
