Critique No. 5: Creating Dimension with a Range of Values and Clean Edges
Drawing wrinkles on a portrait can be challenging. At first glance, a wrinkle may appear to just be a line in the reference photo on the subject’s face.
But just drawing a line probably won’t produce the result you were hoping for. So what’s the secret to drawing wrinkles (or any other fold or contour) on a portrait?
It starts with using the right value and creating a clean edge with your pencil. Following the 3 rules of light, use a darker value in deepest area and — in most cases — be sure to fade the value away gradually on both sides unless there is a hard edge that goes around and out of sight.

Thank you, really good. I enjoyed this and it inspires me to get drawing. I have done several faces, and I am happy about doing better than I have ever done in my life. I hope some day to be able to take your full course of lessons. Again Thank you for sharing. Could I mail you some of my work? Where?
Hi Aly,
Thank you for sharing that with me. To know that you are making that kind of progress is exciting. You are very welcome!

I was just wondering how you draw the hair and make it look real
Hi Kirk,
I don’t know what you have seen. There are several short demos on hair. The Critique # 1 and 2 is on hair and there are others. On our Five Pencil Method site and on YouTube look for “How to draw Realistic Hair”. It is just the basic principle, utilizes the Tapered Stroke and the contrast between light and dark, introduces the 2B pencil for hair, and shows you how the brush and kneaded eraser applies.

I hope this helps! Have fun…

Sorry for being a bother, but after joining you on Face book I found your technique on the hair. Now I will need to find the rest, like the eyes, mouth etc. I guess I will have to save up my money to buy your DVD-s. Thank you for all your techniques. I hope you will show from start to finish how you go about drawing a picture, so we all can get the idea of your drawings.
Thanks again Darrel
Hi Kirk,
I am glad that you found what you are looking for. Much more will be coming!
