Thanks Aamer!!!
Darrell,
I just thought I would give you a little laugh. I am left handed too.
What I usually do is watch the video’s several times and practice away from
the computer. One night while watching the tapered stroke for the first
time, I just happened to have a pencil and paper in my lap. I picked up
the pencil while I was watching you and I did OK..but I kept wanting to
put the pencil in my right hand thinking it felt better and I did the stroke better with that hand. So I just kept using that hand. I will
admit, it was a little late. After the video was over and I was no longer
looking at the screen, I realized, my right hand WAS my left hand. lol
So, I guess, I did pretty good with my right hand. Or something like that.
I haven’t gone off the deep in yet,,I just think you are the greatest
teacher and I just can’t thank you enough. It is so easy to remember what
you say, and thank you for explaining so much.
Still Left Handed,
Linda
Hi Linda,
Thanks, so much, for sharing that. People like you are my gage, as you give me feedback. I want to keep improving where I can.
Thanks for your patience, as we are in the process of producing more lessons. The wait is hard, while they are in production. In the meantime, I will respond to questions when there’s is something interesting that can be shared with everyone.
Have Fun Drawing!!
Darrel
Hi Darrel,
Well, to my great surprise when I opened this video you were specifically addressing a question I posted – that was great, I appreciate it. When I first watched the original tapered stroke video, I was frustrated in that I had trouble tracing the line repetitively, it just got a little thicker everytime. At that point I found it more natural to go in the opposite direction. However, after alot of practice, doing the barrel excersize and the sphere, I found that my stroke became more accurate and I didn’t need to push it away as you were showing is here. I experimented with alot of hand positions as your ideal one felt cumbersome to me, however, it’s become better with practice.
And for the record, I didn’t have my hand over the top of the page like you were showing, although many lefties write that way but it was a good guess on your part that was what I was doing.
So again, thank you very much for the personal response and I am feeling better about my drawing every day. Taking this up for me, a man in my 50’s has been wonderful. I drew a little back in college and actually still have them, they weren’t too bad and that was using your basic number two pencil and some pretty bad paper!
All I can say in the way of advice is practice, practice, practice. I found it much more satisfyling to actually draw something from a magazine photo. It allowed me to copy the shading and get some techinque down without drawing from scratch. A good excersize and a rewarding feeling when it’s completed.
Rick
Hi Rick,
You’re Welcome! Wish I had been able to see your hand position as you were drawing Left Handed. I took a chance and thought it might be worth the effort to respond anyway.
I have relatively small classes, so that I can give as much one on one attention as I can. The most I can accommodate in any one class is six. I have had many left handed artist in the classes over the years, but one group in particular was pretty amazing. Six new students started the class that evening, and out of all the things that could have happened, every single one of them was left handed. I had no previous knowledge that this would be the case, and it certainly wasn’t arranged. I couldn’t believe it, and none of them knew each other. I still marvel at the odds of that happening.. Two of them continued on with me for quite some time (three years or so), and you can see their work on my site. One was a fifteen year old girl, named Collin, and an adult about your age, John Neill. They both had different left handed approaches. Needless to say, I learned a lot.
Thanks for taking the time to share your comments! And yes, practice, practice, practice!!!
Darrel
Dear Mister Tank,
At the start I would like to thank you for Videos. It is always amazing to see what a man can. Actually, I wanted to thank me earlier, but somehow I found no time to do so. In any event, I learn very well with your videos. I love your style, to create portraits.
Also I like how you explain your technique.
Best wishes
evi
Dear Evelyn,
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you are learning from the video demonstrations, and, that you found the time to let me know.
More will be coming and I hope you continue to have fun drawing…
Darrel
Hi Darrel, I was just wondering if you know when you’ll be making a new video?
Hi Dakota,
We have made the first DVD in the next series and we are waiting for the production to finish and then for delivery. After that, I think we will be on a better pace for making the tutorials available. You will be notified immediately when it is available, if you are on the email notification list. I’l be so glad when the wait is over! So much more goes into the process than I would have ever thought.
Darrel
So will i still get all the things to know about this method, or will i need the dvds?
Hi Dakota,
The online videos cover the materials, core concepts, my technique, and the exercises. Everything you need to get you ready for the portrait which is the subject of the next series. Other things are coming as well. Also, I do not know how much you have seen already.
The DVDs will be the main format, and will always have more content. But, they will make it possible for us to create as much free content as possible.
Darrel
I’m left handed and you said not to by a 5 mm mechanical pencil, but I bought one because on youtube someone drew something realistic dog and that’s what he used.
