5-pencil method supply kit now available!
If you’ve been looking for the 5-pencil method supplies, a supplier has now put a kit together for you.
The kits are only US$34.95.
I’m here to help any way I can, including to help you get art materials as affordably as possible.
There’s also a list of the supplies that Dick Blick seems to carry. There are some items that don’t seem to be available from them (like the brush) but if you find an item they carry that’s been missed — or find a better deal — be sure to let me know.
Dear Darrel
I bought the kit now.
thanks for your help

I am currently on SSDisability and can not afford the products you require is there an alternative?
Hi John,
Naturally I’m giving you a list of the things that will give you the best opportunity to achieve my technique, But also there are many principles that will apply across the board to other techniques, medias, and styles. You will have to help me know what you cannot acquire, for me to suggest any alternatives. Some of the things that I use today, and I’m suggesting to you, is a result of my own adjustments to the fact, that I didn’t always the ideal. I started out with a, and I mean “a” pencil, and anything that I could possibly find to draw on. As a young boy, my folks had no means to provide art supplies. My mother and I used the breadboards for our art boards. This is part of the reason that I try to give as much as I can and suggest some of the most economical ways to get into this. For instance, cutting the number of pencils down to five. I’m sure that the distributors and manufacturers would love me to suggest that you buy their whole array of supplies. When I started out as an illustrator many years ago, I, too often, bought the whole array of what I thought I might need, such as, paint, brushes, paper, pencils and whatnot, only to come to the realization that had spent thousands of dollars on unnecessary supplies, which I ended up giving away.
So share with me what you have or you can get. Believe me I understand. When one time, I only had one pair of pants to wear to school, I remember my teacher saying to me, “Surely you can afford an additional pair of pants for five dollars”. Even as a kid I thought, “surely you don’t understand what it’s like to not have five dollars”.
I want to to give as many people as I can, the opportunity to experience what it’s like to create something. To find, that they too, may have an artistic side or ability that they never knew existed. And that, even without a natural artistic ability, that they too may be able to create something, if they have the right instruction and a patient teacher. And, for those who are very accomplished and just want to advance their skills even further by just learning a new tip, I’ll share that as well.
I know it was a long take off on your short question, but I hope this helps you.
I look forward to hearing from you, and thanks for taking the time to comment and question.

Dear Darrel
i like your way of learning drawing and art while you were a child, atleast it ended up with an artist.
it seems that i have the same problem when i was a kid. i did not have money to buy a short for my sports class, so i used to barrow my brother one. accordingly i learn to draw under the bed, inside the pathroom or after every body is sleeping. cuz the drawing was a very big issue in my family.
this insistence and determination made atleast Aamer the artist.

Darrel, In searching for free colored pencil prints to color, I came across your site quite by accident last night. I was fascinated as I viewed your portraits and those of your students. I was curious, when you were discribing your technique with the drawing of the old man, you mentioned photos. I see that many of the drawings are of children. Keeping a child still to draw is impossible. I would love to learn your technique as I have 5 Grandchildren. You are using photo’s aren’t you?
Hi Karen,
You are exactly right. Even though it is wonderful to draw from life, it would be impossible to have a child sit for what I would want to do. Also to capture that precise candid moment that captures the personality and character would take the camera, or it is gone.
Thanks for your question, and I hope you have fun drawing!
